Selecting a membrane material for a tensile structure is not simply a choice between PVDF, PTFE and ETFE. Buyers must also evaluate material construction, structural performance, fire requirements, light transmission, fabrication methods, steel support systems and long-term maintenance.
A suitable membrane specification should match the project location, building function, expected service conditions and local construction standards. This guide explains the main specification differences between PVDF, PTFE and ETFE membrane systems and highlights the technical information buyers should confirm before placing an order.
Understanding the Three Membrane Material Systems
PVC-Coated Polyester Fabric with PVDF Topcoat
PVDF membrane generally refers to a polyester base fabric coated with PVC and finished with a PVDF protective surface layer. It is widely used for commercial canopies, parking shelters, covered walkways, entrance structures, outdoor stages and small-to-medium-span tensile roofs.
The polyester base fabric provides tensile strength, while the PVC coating improves weather resistance and weldability. The PVDF topcoat helps reduce surface contamination and improves resistance to ultraviolet exposure.
PVDF membrane is commonly selected when a project requires flexible design, efficient fabrication, competitive investment and a relatively short production cycle.
PTFE-Coated Fiberglass Membrane
PTFE membrane uses woven fiberglass as the structural base and PTFE as the protective coating. It is generally used for large or long-term public structures, including stadium roofs, airport terminals, railway stations, exhibition halls and transportation hubs.
Compared with polyester-based membrane materials, fiberglass fabric has high dimensional stability and low elongation. This makes PTFE suitable for large-span structures that require stable long-term performance.
PTFE membrane normally requires specialized cutting, welding, installation and tensioning procedures. The supporting steel structure and connection details should be designed as part of the complete membrane system.
ETFE Foil and Cushion Systems
ETFE is a transparent or translucent fluoropolymer foil rather than a woven membrane fabric. It is frequently used for atriums, skylights, transparent roofs, building façades, botanical gardens and commercial public spaces.
ETFE may be installed as a single-layer foil system or as a multi-layer pneumatic cushion system. Cushion systems normally include aluminum profiles, sealing components, air-supply equipment, sensors and control devices.
Because ETFE is lightweight and highly transparent, it can reduce the visual weight of the roof structure while allowing natural daylight into the building. However, the complete system design must consider wind pressure, snow load, drainage, inflation control, acoustic performance and solar heat gain.

The values and performance of membrane materials vary according to the manufacturer, product series, material weight, foil thickness and project requirements. Final specifications should always be confirmed through the supplier’s technical datasheet and project-specific engineering review.
Technical Parameters Buyers Should Compare
Material Weight and Thickness
Material weight is often used as a basic purchasing reference, but it should not be treated as the only quality indicator. Two membrane materials with a similar weight may have different base fabrics, coating formulations, tensile strengths and surface treatments.
Buyers should request the exact product series, total material weight, coating structure and nominal thickness. For ETFE systems, the foil thickness and number of layers should be confirmed separately.
Tensile and Tear Strength
Membrane structures are continuously subjected to tension, wind pressure and repeated environmental loading. Buyers should compare tensile strength and tear strength in both the warp and weft directions.
These values should correspond with the structural calculation and membrane panel layout. Selecting a membrane only by appearance or price may increase the risk of excessive deformation, seam damage or premature failure.
Fire Classification
Fire requirements depend on the project country, building type and approval authority. Public buildings, transportation facilities, sports venues and commercial spaces may require specific fire-test reports.
The supplier should confirm whether the proposed membrane series has been tested according to the required standard. A general product statement is not always sufficient for project approval.
Light Transmission and Solar Control
Light transmission affects indoor brightness, thermal comfort and the appearance of the structure. PVDF and PTFE materials usually provide diffused natural light, while ETFE can provide much higher transparency.
For ETFE roofs and façades, buyers may also specify printed patterns, surface treatments or multiple foil layers to control solar gain and glare.
Seam and Welding Performance
The finished membrane roof is assembled from multiple fabricated panels. Therefore, seam strength and welding quality are as important as the membrane material itself.
Buyers should confirm the welding method, overlap width, sample testing procedure and inspection standard. For large projects, trial fabrication or seam-strength testing may be required before mass production.
Surface Treatment and Cleaning
The membrane surface affects dirt resistance, color stability and maintenance requirements. PVDF and PTFE coatings are commonly selected because they provide a relatively smooth protective surface.
However, drainage slope, nearby pollution sources, dust accumulation and local rainfall will also influence the long-term appearance of the roof.
Documents Buyers Should Request Before Approval
Before approving a membrane material, buyers should request a complete technical document package. Depending on the project, this may include:
- Technical Data Sheet
- Material manufacturer and product series
- Fire-test report
- Batch inspection certificate
- Tensile and tear-strength test results
- Material color sample
- Light-transmission data
- Welding or seam test report
- Warranty conditions
- Packing and transportation requirements
For a complete membrane structure package, the buyer may also require steel material certificates, fabrication drawings, connection details, bolt specifications, coating records, packing lists and installation drawings.
How to Compare Membrane Structure Quotations
Two quotations may appear to describe the same membrane structure but include very different scopes of supply. Buyers should confirm whether each quotation includes the same materials, engineering work and installation support.
Important comparison items include:
- Membrane brand, product series and material specification
- Steel structure weight and steel grade
- Surface treatment or corrosion-protection system
- Cables, clamps, plates, bolts and connection components
- Structural calculation and detailed design
- Membrane patterning and fabrication
- Drainage and rainwater collection details
- Packaging and export transportation
- On-site installation or remote installation guidance
- Inspection documents and warranty coverage
A low quotation may exclude important connection components, engineering services or installation responsibilities. Buyers should compare the complete system rather than only the membrane price per square meter.
Engineering Factors That Influence Material Selection
Project Location and Climate
Wind speed, snow load, rainfall, temperature variation, ultraviolet exposure and coastal corrosion conditions all influence the final specification.
Projects in coastal or industrial environments may require stronger corrosion protection for the steel structure and metal accessories. Projects with heavy rainfall also require carefully designed drainage slopes and water outlets.
Structural Span and Geometry
Membrane structures depend on double-curved surfaces and controlled prestress. The span, support points, mast height, edge cables and membrane curvature should be evaluated together.
A material suitable for a small entrance canopy may not be suitable for a large stadium roof. Structural calculations should be completed before final material approval.
Expected Service Period
The intended service period affects the choice of membrane system, steel protection method and maintenance plan. Temporary commercial structures and permanent public buildings usually have different technical and budget requirements.
Installation Conditions
Site access, crane availability, working height, surrounding buildings and local labor capability can affect the design of membrane panels and steel components.
For overseas projects, factory pre-assembly, clearly numbered components and detailed installation drawings can reduce on-site construction risk.
Which Information Should Buyers Provide?
To receive an accurate material recommendation and quotation, buyers should provide:
- موقع المشروع
- Building function
- المساحة المطلوب تغطيتها
- Available drawings or site dimensions
- Preferred membrane material
- Fire and approval requirements
- Transparency or daylight requirements
- Local wind, snow and rainfall conditions
- Required steel structure scope
- Installation responsibility
- Expected delivery schedule
When drawings are not available, site photographs, sketches and approximate dimensions can be used for an initial concept review.
Choosing the Right Membrane System
PVDF membrane is often suitable for commercial canopies and projects that require flexible design and competitive investment. PTFE membrane is commonly considered for large and long-term public structures. ETFE is preferred when transparency, daylight and lightweight architectural expression are important.
However, material selection should not be based on a simple comparison chart alone. The final decision should combine structural calculations, local codes, fire requirements, environmental conditions, fabrication capability and total project cost.
