Service Station and EV Charging Canopies: Membrane Roofs for Forecourts

2026-10-19

share:

A service station canopy has to cover the pumps or chargers, carry lighting and signage, and stay open enough for vehicles to move safely. The structure is simple in principle, but the details decide whether it works: clear height, column positions, drainage and fire safety.

These reference views show canopies for EV charging, bus charging and a fuel forecourt. Each uses a different roof form, but the same planning questions apply.

Project snapshot

Item Reference scope
Application Fuel station, EV charging hub, bus depot charging
Typical bay 6–9 m per car bay; about 12 m for a bus bay
Clear height 5.0–6.0 m for cars; 4.5–5.5 m for buses
Roof forms Pyramid, long-span, angular, saddle
Membrane and frame PVC/PVDF on galvanised steel

What the design has to solve

  • Keep columns clear of vehicles. Place them between bays or on islands, and protect them with bollards.
  • Provide enough height. Vans, buses and roof equipment need more clearance than a standard car.
  • Drain away from the forecourt. Collect water at the perimeter and keep outlets out of walkways.
  • Coordinate services. Lighting, CCTV, signage and charging cables should be designed with the structure.

Roof forms in this reference set

Long canopy over bus charging

A shallow roof on a regular column grid covers a row of buses. It is efficient and gives a continuous sheltered zone, but the columns need protection from reversing vehicles.

Angular retail canopy

A folded roof gives a strong brand shape and hides a deeper structure zone. The folds must work as drainage lines, or water will collect at the low corners.

Materials and delivery

PVC/PVDF is the usual choice for cost, colour and easy cleaning. Fuel areas also need a membrane and coating that meet the local fire performance requirements.

  • Hot-dip galvanised steel with stainless fixings
  • LED lighting and cable trays fixed to the structure
  • Perimeter gutters with accessible outlets

Frequently asked questions

Can the canopy be extended bay by bay?

Yes, if it is designed as a repeating module with independent drainage and foundations.

Can it cover EV chargers?

Yes. The cabinets, cables and payment terminals should be kept under cover and outside the vehicle swept path.

How is vehicle impact handled?

Columns sit outside the swept path and are protected with bollards or an impact-resistant base. The structure should also be checked for an accidental vehicle load.
