Hotel Membrane Structure Canopies: Terrace, Restaurant and Poolside Case Study

2026-10-19

share:

A hotel canopy extends the usable season outdoors. It has to shade without blocking the view, protect from rain without feeling enclosed, and look part of the architecture.

These reference views show peaked rooftop tents, an arched restaurant roof and a wave canopy beside a pool.

Item Reference scope
Application Terrace, restaurant, pool deck, villa
Typical area 30–300 m² per zone
Forms Peaked tents, arch, wave, shell
Membrane and frame PVC/PVDF, galvanised or coated steel
Design drivers Guest comfort, views, wind, acoustics, corrosion

What the design has to solve

  • Keep the view open. Place masts outside the main sightlines and keep the roof edges high.
  • Provide shade without trapping heat. Open sides and a light membrane help hot air escape.
  • Keep water off the terrace. Drainage should not cross seating or pool decks.
  • Specify for the coast. Salt, humidity and pool chemicals attack steel and fittings.

Roof forms in this reference set

Arched restaurant roof

An arch gives a clear span and a sense of enclosure without walls. The edge should stay high enough that guests do not feel they are sitting under a low ceiling.

Wave canopy at the pool

A wave roof follows the resort geometry and shades loungers and cabanas. Drainage must be kept away from the pool deck, and the membrane should resist chlorine and sunscreen.

Materials and delivery

White or sand PVC/PVDF is common for resort canopies. Coastal sites should use stainless fittings and a duplex-coated or stainless frame.

  • PVC/PVDF 850–1100 g/m² with a colour-stable top coat
  • Duplex-coated or stainless steel for coastal exposure
  • Warm-white dimmable LED lighting

Frequently asked questions

Can a terrace be covered without blocking the view?

Yes. High edges, slim masts and cable-supported roofs keep the structure visually light. The layout should follow the key sightlines.

How is rain noise reduced?

Use a heavier or double-layer membrane, add an acoustic lining where the space is enclosed, and introduce soft surfaces below.

Which membrane suits a coastal hotel?

PVC/PVDF with a colour-stable top coat is common, with stainless fittings and a corrosion-resistant frame. PTFE is used where a longer service life justifies the cost.
